First of all, love your page. Just got to Fussa from Alaska and have been dying to get on the river. Is there something within a two hr drive that have big rivers. I’ve been looking for a place to do some spey fishing here.
Hi Khae
Fussa? You are only minutes away from Tama River whose upper segment above Hamura Sluice is trout water. See this blog under “fishery” to see if you can find place of your interest.
I looked at the blog for Tama River but it really doesn’t say where to go so I stopped by where ever I could find river access. The area’s where i stopped didn’t really have people fishing so I wasn’t sure if I was at the right place. The places I stopped had families out bbq by the river side. The last place I stopped, which i think i was upriver of Hamura Sluice, there was a people playing baseball and soccer in the field next to the river.
Trouts are only stocked in waters above Hamura Sluice. You go too far up the river along R411, then it will turn into small mountain creeks not suitable for spey. Idea is to fish in this “lower section” between Hamura and Okutama Fishing Centre.
Map (japanese). Shaded spots upstream is Okutama Fishing Centre.

I didn’t make it that far upriver near the Okutama fishing center in Matake. One of the stops i did make was at the camp site Kawai from the pictures I’ve seen. I’ll take another drive next weekend and see what else I can find. Thanks for the help.
You went to the right area.
Scenery of water near big city doesn’t look too promising, but that’s just the way it looks.
You may want to spey on lakes which is more common around here. Or travel north to Sendai.
Hope you catch the good one.
I’ll update Upper Tama River with more details.
I love this site and have switched all my research here for a trip to Japan in August. I just have to fit in a day of mountain stream fishing for yamame or iwana but will be relying on train and may not have time while near Tokyo. Are there good places to fish further east, from Mt Fuji area to as far east as Osaka?
I believe there are good streams in the west near Osaka where yamame is replaced with her kin amago or landlocked red-spotted salmon.
You could search venues here:

Hi. Visited your page for the first time and liked it. I am crazy about fishing, just like you (but still at an amature level due to lack of time). Maybe some of you have already visited Mongolia, which has many wonderful fishing sites. If not, you should give it it a try. Siberian taimen could be the main goal along with lenok, grayling etc. Hope to see you someday.
By the way, if you’re interested in a fishing trip in Mongolia, we could organize it.
Could you share the link to your proposed service?
Mongolia sounds great.
Actually, I don’t run such a business. However, if you wish, I could send some names and addresses, or if the time is right, we could go fishing together as friends. The thing is that we usually enjoy the wilderness and adventures, without staying at cozy tourist camps or enjoying various luxuries. If you wish, we could communicate through e-mail.
Hi Chinzorig
Very interesting indeed!
I will email you.
